Vacation in France Dordogne

The Dordogne, also known as the Perigord is without a doubt one of the most interesting and diverse regions in the world. It is one of the best regions for active vacations for families, combining history, great cuisine and adventure outdoors with one of the most beautiful countrysides in all of France. For those who love to test their limits -walking, water sports, horse-riding cycling, rock climbing and cave exploration are all here.

The "Perigord Noir" overlooks the Vezere and Dordogne valleys, while the Dordogne River meanders gently through Southwest France from Auvergne to the Bordelais. A day in a canoe drifting down the River is an experience not to be missed. The wooded valleys on the river banks give way to small villages not visible from elsewhere. Pass by Beynac and La Roque-Gageac; then stop in Beaulieu, a typical Dordogne village with its old city walls, its narrow cobbled streets and its 12th century Abbey- church with a carved doorway depicting the Last Judgment. There is also an interesting exhibit about the history and construction of gabares (river boats) here.

Dominating the landscape is the impressive castle of Castelnau-Bretenoux and the rolling hills and ridges beyond. Biking trails wind around the hills to arrive at the castle. Constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries, Castelnau-Bretenoux is one of the most striking examples of medieval architecture in southern France. Built as an impregnable triangular fortress with deep ditches and a solid rampart, it sits on a high terrace overlooking the valley. It was taken by Henry II of England in 1159, and returned to the barons of Castelnau at the end of the Hundred Years' War.

Cycling in the Dordogne is superb. The quiet country roads suit all levels of riding, the scenery is beautiful, and the river is always nearby. Biking routes abound and cycling along the small country lanes through fields of corn and tobacco provide great views back to Castelnau-Bretenoux. Villages with red-tiled roofs, manor houses, and chateaux punctuate the region and are well on the biking route. The route of the Cirque de Montvalent includes delightful villages like Carrenac, Vayrac, and Fleurac, all parts and parcel of the biking trails along the river. This is one of the most beautiful parts of the Dordogne Valley, where chateaux perch high above the cliffs.

A visit to this beautiful region of France - by foot, by canoe, on horse, on bike and more - is to discover its chateaux, its beautiful medieval villages, unspoiled countryside and prehistoric caves, as well as that coffee in a small café, the picnic on its river banks and the sense of enveloping peace
